Williams group embraces diversity
It doesn't boast the smoothest acronym we've ever heard — SPENCOW, the Spanish/English Committee of Williams — but in just a single month of existence, it sure has taken the stage.
The group exists to push Hispanic interests in Williams — and given that the city's population is about 80 percent Hispanic, that's no small thing. On April 23, Pearson reported the group has asked city clerk Charles Bergson and former city treasurer Santos Jauregui to be its representatives in the 2014 city council election.
They mean business, too: SPENCOW has already talked about dissatisfaction with the city's parks; concerns about streets, sidewalks and lights; dismay at the lack of Hispanic representation on the city council; and the need to restart the recreation program — in particular, funding to bring the city's soccer fields back up to playability.
This is how things get done in communities — by putting people with energy and enthusiasm in positions to make a difference, and then letting them do it.
The Spanish / English Committee of Williams formed in 2014 to address the current and future needs of the Williams community. It is composed of a broad spectrum of community members. ...post011016...
